This is a story about research into Community Scale Batteries:
The Illawarra was one of the first areas to have a battery of this scale. It is installed in the Keb]mbla Grange area to manage peak power loads of the newly developing suburbs. Its capacity is around 2 Megawatt hours.
A battery of this type would be an ideal substitute for hundreds of in house batteries which are currently expensive and take years to pay back their purchase cost.
At the time of the research project, the concept was way ahead of its time. It was difficult to fiund information, costings and working examples. One year later most of the Distribution Companies have them on their drawing boards and are planning pilot installations.
The plan was submitted to the Wollongong City Council but was not included in the Climate change Mitigation Plan
